If you are an artist or photographer, you may just paint, draw or take photographs for fun or as a hobby but there also might come a time when you would like to make some extra income. There are a number of ways that you can make income from your art and here are a few ideas:
Craft Fairs
You could take a table at a craft fair to try and sell your artwork. However, try and do some research as to what kind of paintings, drawings or photographs sell best at craft fairs and festivals. Maybe visit some beforehand that you might participate in and check what kind or artwork people are selling and what is selling well.
Portraits
If you are good at drawing portraits then you could set yourself up at events to draw people on the spot. Or you could advertise your talents to do pictures of people from a photograph. You could do these for special occasions or as gifts. How about a graduation or engagement portrait? If you are a photographer you could start by taking pictures of friends and family and use those for your portfolio.
Landscapes
Landscape paintings are always good sellers at markets and fairs if they are of the surrounding area. Don't always concentrate specifically on craft fairs but maybe look at other options like agricultural fairs etc. You could also advertise in your local paper to do paintings or drawings of the local area. A great idea for a gift is a picture of someone's house if it is very special to them or maybe a church where someone is getting married as a wedding gift.
Online
There are lots of sites online that pay for people to upload pictures, whether they are paintings, drawings or photographs, often you get a royalty every time your picture gets downloaded.
You could also sell your art online in places like eBay and the specialist art and craft websites, in particular etsy. Have things that are easy to post so that postage costs are reasonably low. You could sell prints of your originals which would give you leeway to sell more quantities.
There are plenty of ways to make money from your art. Sometimes you may just have to become more commercial than you would be otherwise. If you want to make some extra money then think it through, do some research and planning and create what is likely to sell.
